Senior Medicare Patrol Project (SMPP)
“For every $10 that is spent by Medicare for services and supplies, $1 is lost to fraud, waste or abuse. The quality of treatment and amount of services Medicare beneficiaries may receive diminishes, and higher premiums, co-payments and deductibles result.”
The AAAD administers a Senior Medicare Patrol Project to help eradicate fraud and abuse within the Medicare Program. This grant provides for the recruitment and training of volunteers to assist Medicare recipients in understanding Medicare summary notices, checking for discrepancies, and educating seniors on Medicare issues. Volunteers are trained and placed in convenient locations to provide this free and confidential service.
A one year grant extension has been given to fund Tennessee's Senior Medicare Patrol Project. The project is designed to help Medicare recipients recognize fraud and abuse within the Medicare Program. Through this grant volunteers are recruited and trained to assist in helping Medicare recipients understand Medicare summary notices and how to check for discrepancies such as payments for visits they did not have or medical equipment they did not receive. The Southwest AAAD has ten trained volunteers serving eight counties. These volunteers operate within the senior centers, assisted living facilities and senior public housing facilities.
