Solid Waste

The Solid Waste Act of 1991 mandated that counties in Tennessee each develop a plan that addresses solid waste management.

The SWTDD contracts annually with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Community Services to provide planning assistance to county officials.

Our staff assists county Solid Waste Directors, Solid Waste Advisory Boards, county elected officials and solid waste recyclers in implementing the approved 10-year county Solid Waste Management Plan.

The SWTDD assists with annual solid waste reports, assessment needs, recycling and waste tire grants, county household hazardous waste events as well as educational events in each county.

Our goal is to assist counties with meeting the Solid Waste Act of 1991, which mandated a 25 percent reduction of municipal solid waste that is deposited in local landfills.
